FARMINGTON – Heirlooms of Tomorrow continues its “Artist of the Month” series with Suzanne DiStefano of Farmington showing her work in September. The public is invited to attend an Open House reception on Friday, Sept. 5 from 4-7 p.m. and on Saturday the 6th from 11-4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and Suzanne will be in attendance to explain her work.

Suzanne is a relatively new artist who emerged at a show for Stan Keirstead’s students which was hosted by Heirlooms of Tomorrow two years ago.

Suzanne says she is a Franklin County native who grew up on an apple orchard in East Wilton. “I have always had a strong love for nature and animals. As a child I remember spending countless hours drawing pictures of horses and dogs and later of fashion models.”

“In the late ’60s, I took oil painting lessons from a local artist and neighbor, Mary MacDonald. I discovered that oil painting was too time consuming to be compatible with raising our family of four children so I turned my creative energy to planting flower and vegetable gardens and building paths, steps and walls through them of native stones.

“I didn’t return to painting until five years ago when I had the opportunity to take watercolor classes from Stan Keirstead. My painting method is detailed and it makes no difference how long a painting takes to complete. The joy is in the journey, not the destination. I enjoy trying to capture the beauty that I see in nature and painting flowers from the garden. I have discovered that it is much easier to create those stone walls on watercolor paper than it is to make real ones,” she said.

The staff at SugarWood looks forward to hosting Suzanne’s first solo exhibit. SugarWood is a handcrafted fine furniture store and art gallery located at 248 Broadway in Farmington. Store hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
