Maine Ulster Scots Project Tuesday

SOUTH CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will present Maine author and lecturer of the Maine Ulster Scots Project, John Mann, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Oct. 21 in South Carthage at 7 p.m. This will be the first in a new lecture series being offered at Skye Theatre. All proceeds of the evening will go to benefit the new addition currently underway at Skye Theatre.

The state of Maine has one of the highest percentages of Scots and Scots-Irish people in America and yet very little has been written about their journey to, and influence on, Maine and America. Thousands of Scots-Irish immigrants arrived in Maine and New England in the years prior to the American Revolution. Their settlements throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts intentionally put them at the center of struggle between the power of France, England and the Native Americans for control of North America.

The Maine Ulster Scots Project (MUSP) is dedicated to saving and sharing the stories of the Maine families who carved out a homeland and fought for their vision of freedom during the critical years prior to the birth of America. U.S. Census Data (2000) confirms that Maine has, per capita, the highest percentage of Scots descendants in the entire USA, and ranks third in the country for Scots-Irish descendants. However, we know practically nothing about them because their stories have never been told.

John Mann is a professional land surveyor, chairman of the Maine Ulster-Scots Project (MUSP) and a descendant of the Means and other Ulster-Scots families of Freeport, Maine.  The Saint Andrews Society of Maine (SASME) sponsors the Maine Ulster-Scots Project. Its mission is to gather and save the stories of Maine’s Ulster-Scots families and to periodically publish and otherwise share that information with the public and with Maine’s school children. Mr. Mann is the author of Ulster-Scots on the Coast of Maine Volume 1, The Means’ Massacre background and location.  For more information on the Maine Ulster-Scots Project visit www.maineulsterscots.com.

“The good work of Skye Theatre introducing and promoting the Celtic Arts in Maine makes it a perfect venue for rediscovering the strong Celtic background of Maine’s founding families. We hope you can join us for some great slides and an entertaining discussion on Maine’s overlooked and forgotten people,” says Mann.

Skye Theater is located 3 miles West of East Dixfield village at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Rd and US RT. 2 in South Carthage. Ticket price is $10 at the door. Call New England Celtic Arts at (207) 562-4445 for reservations and directions. More information at: http://www.necelticarts.com.
