New board at Arts Institute

FARMINGTON – The Arts Institute of Western Maine has recently expanded its Board of Directors and elected a new president. AIWM, an affiliate of the University of Maine at Farmington, sponsors many of the music concerts and performances at UMF, including dance, mime, film and other performing arts.

Diane Kruchkow of New Sharon, has been appointed the new president. She comes from a literature background, has taught at UMF and established the Small Press Center there. Kruchkow also teaches skiing at Titcomb Mt.

Sarah Sloane, appointed vice president, is on the biology faculty at UMF and is active in the Community Chorus as well as other choral groups; she will soon be seen in “A Christmas Carol.” Camilla Cai, a retired music professor from Kenyon College, will serve as treasurer.

Other Board members are Bruce McInnes, retired music professor from Amherst College who presently directs the Community Chorus at UMF as well as the Old South Church choir; Milton Kidd, retired music professor from American University and piano instructor at UMF; Dan Woodward who is very active in the local music scene and directs the Henderson Baptist Church choir (also to be heard in the upcoming “Christmas Carol”); Sarah Maline, chair of UMF’s Department of Sound, Performance, and Visual Inquiry; Karyl Condit who is in the Community Chorus and coordinates Inner Rhythm, a womens’ drum group; Sandra Keith who recently moved to Farmington from Minnesota, is active in piano and painting and is a retired math professor; and Misty Beck, a faculty member in the UMF English Department.

The Arts Institute got its start in the 1970s, and was led by David Scribner for about 20 years until he retired. Dan Woodward has been the most recent president.

Upcoming concerts sponsored by AIWM include Tsuga Baroque on Nov. 21, Nordica Trio on Feb. 20 and Boreal Tordu on March 5. Stay tuned for news on an upcoming jazz concert and other events.
