Poet’s Corner: Remembrance

                           Remembrance

Cardinal – sing. You in the feeder gazing on sodden
roses, whisk back into shadow. You the messenger
of change. What follows rain, but cumulus clouds
visions of sea leaving land at low tide, revealing
your plumage, bird of red color.
I am dreaming a scarlet path
where you fly to a tree, mystery in darkness, movement
in branches, evening song stilled when night fades. Stars
reach a silver edged leaf as it turns with wind.
Hold your flight:
for the departed sleep now, O bird —
gone home to the world of sea – mountain – sky.
