FARMINGTON – The Arts Institute of Western Maine will present a six-member “Rock My Soul Gospel Group” on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 pm in the Nordica Auditorium of Merrill Hall, University of Maine at Farmington.
The vocalists/instrumentalists are from the southern Maine Gospel Music Project which is devoted to the original meaning of the word gospel, “good news”
and will perform a variety of black and white southern gospel (Appalachian bluegrass), hymns, spirituals, and secular (but spiritual) repertoire.
The Gospel Music Project is a cultural and arts-related music organization devoted to but one primary purpose: “Carrying an uplifting message of hope, strength, and joy to diverse audiences and communities, bringing us all closer together to understand the meaning of peace, equality, respect, unity, and justice”
. The members, from many different faith backgrounds, have in common a deep appreciation of and respect for gospel music’s tremendous impact on our history and culture.
