“American Love” video by Dawn Nye, UMF assistant professor of art, is one of many exciting new works included in UMF Art Gallery exhibit “Pandemonium.”

FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington ushers in an exciting new year of bringing contemporary art and artists to campus with “Pandemonium,” a dynamic and intriguing exhibit of new works by the faculty of the UMF Department of Sound, Performance, and Visual Inquiry. The exhibit is free and open to the public and will be held at the UMF Art Gallery Thursday, Sept. 2 – Sunday, Sept. 26. A gala opening reception will launch the exhibit from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, featuring a performance by Gustavo Aguilar at 5:30 p.m.

“Pandemonium” will highlight the works of Gustavo Aguilar, Krisanne Baker, J. Thomas R. Higgins, Anthony Holmquist, Christopher Lavery, Dawn Nye, Elizabeth Olbert, Katrazyna Randall, Dona Seegers and Barbara Sullivan, reflecting the breadth and dynamism of the UMF faculty.

Ranging from video projection and kinetic sculpture to painting and installation, these works are simultaneously nuanced and accessible, timely and expansive. They ask us to consider contemporary definitions of formalism, criticality and culture in ways that mirror the energy and innovation of the UMF community as a whole. Ultimately, the exhibition leads us to consider the role of such communities in the cultural life of the larger world.

Gallery talks scheduled by several of the artists will be free and open to the public, including:

  • 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, by J. Thomas R. Higgins and Elizabeth Olbert
  • 11:45 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, by Dawn Nye and Katrazyna Randall
  • 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, by Christopher Lavery and Barbara Sullivan

The gallery is located at 246 Main St. in Farmington, immediately behind the Admissions Office. The gallery is open noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, during the UMF academic year and by appointment.
