FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington Community Orchestra will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, May 9, at Nordica Auditorium in UMF Merrill Hall. The ensemble, directed by Trond Saeverud, is a full symphonic orchestra including UMF students, staff and community members.
The spring program will include the Beethoven “Eroica” Symphony; the Stravinsky Suite No. 2; and “In the Still of the Night”, “So In Love”, and “Begin the Beguine” by Cole Porter.
Tenor Daniel Woodward will be featured as vocal soloist in the three Cole Porter selections. Woodward has appeared in many musical productions by Sandy River Players, sings with the UMF Community Chorus, and has previously performed with the Kingfield Pops in their July 4 concert. He has also served as director and arranger for the Continental Harmony Chorus, part of Foothills Arts, and is currently choir director and organist at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church in Farmington.
UMF Community Orchestra conductor and violinist, Trond Saeverud has performed as soloist with major orchestras in Europe and the U.S., including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Lincoln Center in New York City. He has built and conducted several community orchestras in Scandinavia, led annual chamber music workshops in Colorado and Missouri, and created his own school outreach program in Maine. Saeverud is currently concertmaster of the Bangor Symphony, first violin in the Nor’easter String Quartet, artistic director of the Harald Saeverud Chamber Music Program and founder and conductor of the new Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra. He has produced CDs as soloist with Danish and Norwegian orchestras, and his recital CD “HIKA” was chosen as “Strad Selection ” in the May 2002 Strad magazine.
The concert is open to the public and tickets are available at the door the night of the performance at $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and free for UMF students with I.D.
