FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington presents “Rabbit Hole,” David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, as Theatre UMF’s fall 2010 production. A simple yet touching story about a family and its struggle to overcome the death of their child, the play will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 21-23; and 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 24, at the UMF Alumni Theater.

Lindsay-Abaire’s play tells the story of Becca and Howie Corbett, a couple whose seemingly perfect world is turned upside down by a tragic accident. In danger of drifting perilously apart, the couple forges ahead in their search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a way to recapture some of the happiness they once knew. Painful, poignant and often funny, the drama shows how everyone’s unique skills allow them to cope with grief in their own way.

Directed by Peter Simmel, UMF associate professor of theatre, the play features a small cast and offers honest dialogue.

“This play is an actor’s and director’s dream,” said Simmel. “The language is crisp and well-written and resonates like a real conversation. It’s a great opportunity for our student actors to connect with the characters and get into the world of the play. That’s what good theatre is all about.”

Though Lindsay-Abaire is best known for his absurdist comedies in which his characters possess an emotional truth, his work often explores struggle and loss. In addition to winning the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for drama, “Rabbit Hole” also received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play and the Spirit of America Award. Lindsay-Abaire was most recently awarded the 2008 Ed Kleban Award as America’s most promising musical theatre lyricist. His other shows include “Fuddy Meers,” “Kimberly Akimbo,” “Wonder of the World,” “High Fidelity” and “A Devil Inside,” among others. He recently wrote the screenplay for the Newline feature “Inkheart” and a screen adaptation of “Rabbit Hole” for 20th Century Fox.

Tickets for the performance are $6 for adults, $5 for all students and $4 for seniors. Tickets are available at the time of the performance and can be reserved by calling the Theatre UMF box office at 207-778-7465. This presentation’s content is of an adult nature and suitable for mature audiences only.
