WILTON – Barclaycard US, the U.S. payments business of Barclays PLC, was named one of the Best Places to Work in Maine for 2009. The recognition program was created in 2006 by the Society for Human Resources Management – Maine State Council. Partners endorsing the program include: Employment Times, Maine and Company, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and Mainebiz. The 2009 Best Places to Work in Maine program is sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Barclaycard US, headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, maintains a customer contact center in Wilton, Maine, where 100 colleagues provide customer support services. The center opened in April 2008.

The “Best in the Business”  program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The 2009 Best Places to Work in Maine list includes 24 companies in the small/medium-sized category (15-249 employees) and seven companies in the large-sized category (250+ employees).

To be considered for participation, companies met these eligibility requirements:

– Have at least 15 employees working in Maine
– Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity
– Be a publicly or privately held business
– Have a facility in the state of Maine
– Must be in business a minimum of 1 year

“We’re thrilled to be recognized as a Best Place to Work in Maine, especially in our first year of eligibility,” said Jen McEntee, director, Wilton Care Center. “This validates our commitment to having a comfortable work environment, providing opportunities for career development and being a responsible corporate citizen by encouraging our colleagues to seek opportunities to support our community.”

Barclaycard colleagues contribute to the community in many ways. Last year, the 1,400 colleagues of Barclaycard US contributed 28,000 hours of volunteer service. During the past year, Barclaycard colleagues in Maine have contributed 1,369 volunteer hours.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75 percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Maine and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.

Barclaycard US will be recognized and honored at the Best Places to Work in Maine awards ceremony on October 13 and will be profiled in a special publication by Mainebiz. The final rankings will be announced at the event.
