KINGFIELD – Poland Spring Water Company recently presented $1,000 scholarships to five members of Mt. Abram High School’s Class of 2010 who are pursuing a post-secondary education in science, engineering or the environment.

“We are happy to give these scholarships to help train the next generation in science, engineering and the environment – fields that are so vital to Maine’s economic and environmental health,” said Cameron Lorrain, Kingfield Plant Manager. “Congratulations to these fine students for their academic achievements.”

The Good Science Scholarship program was established in 2007 as a way of giving back to local Poland Spring communities and to demonstrate support for higher education. Individuals with expertise in science, technology and environmental policy are vital to a healthy Maine economy. Since establishing the program, Poland Spring has awarded more than $54,000 to high school seniors pursuing further training and education in these fields.

The students and their families attended a celebratory dinner at the Poland Spring bottling plant in Kingfield, which began operations in early 2009. The evening’s festivities included a guided tour of the bottling facility and an opportunity to meet plant staff and management.

The local scholarship recipients are:

Philip Coffren, Salem Township – University of Maine (Mechanical Engineering)
Hillary Eustis, Phillips – Syracuse University (NY) (Anthropology)
Grace Hooke, Salem Township – Smith College (MA) (Archeology or Anthropology)
Kaelyn Lecander, Stratton – Bethel University (MN) (Pre-med or Environmental Science)
Cree Rousseau, Phillips – University of Maine (Anthropology)
