FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington students Denise Robinson and Daniel Kane were recently named Outstanding Future Professionals by the Maine chapter of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. They were honored with this distinction, based on their academic achievement, campus and community involvement, leadership qualities and professional standing.

A national association with over 20,000 members, AAHPERD is dedicated to promoting and supporting leadership, research, education and best practices in the professions that support creative, healthy and active lifestyles.

A junior from Dexter majoring in community health education, Robinson is active in wellness activities on campus and has been an integral part of the UMF Health Club, serving as its president for the last two years. She is passionate about helping to improve the health and welfare of people and their communities and is planning a directed study for fall 2011 when she’ll be working with several non-profit groups helping to bring basic public health practices to orphanages in India and Cambodia.

A junior from Bradford, Kane is majoring in community health education with a concentration in school health. This semester he will be immersed in a hands-on teaching experience, fulfilling his practicum at a local school. He is a member of the Health Club, the Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Society and plays on the UMF basketball team.

“Denise and Daniel have really dedicated themselves to learning by doing,” said Maurice Martin, UMF associate professor of community health education. “This recognition is well-deserved and shows how the skills and knowledge students gain in the classroom work together with the real-world experience they receive in the field to help them grow as professionals.”

In addition to the honor of being named as an Outstanding Student Professional by the Maine chapter, Robinson has also been selected as one of only two Maine college students to represent Maine at AAHPERD’s annual Eastern District convention.
