Wildflower Walls now offering Energy Audits

For the past three and a half years, Wildflower Walls has focused on interior painting, faux finishes, and wallcoverings, helping homeowners refresh their homes. Over time, however, Wildflower Walls owner Janine Winn began to recognize a need to help people make their homes more efficient as well.

As a result, Winn became a certified Residential Energy Auditor through the Maine State Housing Authority and under the sponsorship of The Opportunity Center of North Franklin County and is now offering Affordable Energy Audits throughout the greater Franklin County area.

“The science of weatherization has changed dramatically in the past few years,” Winn said. Houses are now seen as a system. They actively pull cold air in at the ground level and push warm air out at the upper levels. Stopping that air flow through the walls, attic, and the house as a whole can increase comfort levels and decrease fuel bills.

Blower doors, infrared cameras and an understanding of the physics of house systems makes it possible to identify leaks that would be missed by more traditional methods. New materials now make it much simpler and more cost effective to remedy the leaks.

Energy audits provide the information needed to tackle air sealing and weatherization projects. A thorough inspection followed by concise report and includes an understandable list of retrofits.

Many of the fixes are things a do-it-yourselfer might tackle. Others are things that most people would rather hire a carpenter or trained weatherization technician to do. “But either way, you need to start with an audit,” according to Winn.
