A lot of great birds, even in winter

2 mins read

“I have been enjoying capturing some unique birds that are really striking to see up close. The Bohemian Waxwings and Snow Buntings are winter visitors. The Merlin is a falcon. There are two woodpeckers, an uncommon Red Bellied Woodpecker, (that species is making its way northward) and the always comical Pileated Woodpecker. All of these pictures were taken in and around the edges of Farmington in January.

“A great neighbor made me aware that a handsome Barred Owl was in the neighborhood. I was able to get a few pictures this morning, Saturday, Jan. 19.  There are a lot of great birds in Farmington, even in winter! I hope you and your readers enjoy them.”  – Steve Muise

  1. Great pictures Mr. Music. I have never seen (even in pictures) a Snow Bunting before. What a great bird. And the Bohemian Waxwing and the Barred Owl are awesome. Good job.

  2. Absolutely stunning pictures!! What a great job you did. I, too, had never seen a Snow Bunting before and was thrilled with your photo of one.

I would be really hard put to choose a favorite!!

  3. Great photos, Steve, technically and artistically. I had a visit from a Bohemian this year and missed getting the shot, he was passing through. Snow buntings last year but your photo is so much better. I don’t know that I’ve seen a merlin, but chances are I have and simply misidentified it. The owl is beautiful. I’ve heard them, talked to them with a call, but never brought one in close in daylight.

  4. Wonderful pictures, Steve! I too have never seen a snow bunting – wonder if they live here, or are just travelling through? Thanks for sharing!

  5. Wonderful photographs Steve. The owl has such detail! Thank you so much for posting these.

  6. Very nice capture of the less ordinary birds of winter. The Bohemian Waxwing is my favorite, well, along with all the others!

  7. These are great! The snow bunting is adorable! I’ll have to keep a lookout for them. I don’t think I’ve seen one near my woods/feeders, but I’d love to! Thanks for the pictures!

  8. I don’t know how you could’ve even *seen* the owl, it blends into its environment so well. Great pictures.

  9. Steve, thank you for taking and sharing these wonderful photos! I know what kind of effort goes into getting close and getting a good shot…and you’ve done that with so many different species. Great job!

  10. Awesome pics Steve! Your pics are amazing and your patience in finding the “right shot,” is inspiring. Thank you Bulldog for giving us the chance to see everyone’s pictures.

  11. I’m so glad you are out looking at the birds! Excellent photos and great job on the CBC. Remember when we froze our fingers and toes chasing that Saw-whet in Wilton? Your photos show why chasing birds is so rewarding. Keep ’em coming!
