Ag Day at the Fair

Milton Weeks shows off his cider press at the Agriculture Education day at the Farmington Fair.

FARMINGTON – Last month, the Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District sent out word of a possible problem.

They needed a cider press, and they needed one quick.

The district organizes the annual Agricultural/Environmental Education Day at the Farmington Fair. The event is always held on the first Monday of the fair, and admission is free for the more than 1,200 elementary students who attend. Students can view and, in some cases, pet the animals, watch demonstrations and learn about how the food they eat is grown and prepared. So when the old cider press used in previous years by the district broke down, it was a serious problem.

However, the district eventually made contact with Milton Weeks, who owns an old-styled press and come Monday, wide-eyed children watched as apples dumped into the device were crushed into cider.

“Let’s see what we got here,” Weeks said, lifting a cover of protective cheesecloth, “let’s see if we have some cider.”
