FARMINGTON – The results for the 2008 Mt. Blue High School Mock Election are in, concluding a month-long project which involved multiple teachers and educational disciplines.

The results show that 49 percent of the student body voted in the election, lower that the “80 to 90 percent” organizers had originally estimated. Roughly 900 students attend MBHS.

In the presidential race, democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama had 78 percent of the vote, compared to republican candidate Senator John McCain’s 22 percent. This result mirrors what many students in Phillip St. Onge’s honors government classes said would be the likely results. St. Onge’s classes dealt with the buildup to the election by supporting the candidates through posters, video and speeches.

The senatorial race was close, with 51 percent of students supporting republican candidate Senator Susan Collins over the 49 percent of students supporting democratic candidate Representative Tom Allen.

In the congressional race for the 2nd District, students supported the democratic candidate Representative Mike Michaud over local republican candidate John Frary, by a vote of 73 percent to 27 percent.

The local senatorial race for District 18 had state Senator Walter Gooley beating democratic challenger Ann Woloson by a vote of 54 percent to 46 percent.

Students voted ‘yes’ for all three ballot initiatives. The votes were close for Question 1, the people’s veto on a recently passed tax on soda and beer, by a 51 percent to 49 percent margin. They were also close for Question 2, whether to allow Oxford County to build casino, with 52 percent voting in favor and 48 percent in opposition. Question 3, a bond issue for drinking water and sewage treatment
infrastructure, passed by a 62 percent to 38 percent margin.
