Library begins issuing ‘Children’s Cards’

Elysia Roorbach (left) receives her new library card from Joanne Moloney (right) at the Farmington Public Library. The library has traditionally kept the card’s in a file, not issuing a physical card until patrons are a bit older.

However, Roorbach and her mom, Juliet Karelsen, suggested that ‘Children’s Cards’ be offered to give kids a sense of ownership. The card is made out of a stamped cardboard, and can be inexpensively replaced if necessary.

Head Librarian Melanie Taylor Coombs said it was a “fantastic idea.”

“Having a library card is a great way to teach children responsibility,” Coombs said. “They have such a sense of pride taking care of their library books. Literacy begins at birth and it’s important that kids are welcome here at the library.”

  1. That is a great honor, and I know Elysia. She is a true friend. I’m actually directing a play that she’s going to be in!
