Motorcyclist killed in Carrabassett Valley crash

CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Police are still trying to determine why a Waterville man’s motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve in the road, leading to his death.

Terry Giguere, 64, of Waterville, was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, after being transported via helicopter from the Carrabassett Valley Airport. According to Police Chief Scott Nichols, Giguere and two friends were taking a motorcycle ride around Franklin County and were headed back south from Stratton when the incident occurred at roughly 1 p.m.

The area is known locally as the “S-curves,” consisting of a part of Route 27 south of Sugarloaf Mountain where the roadway swerves back and forth. Nichols said that Giguere’s traveling companions, Guy Russell, 56, of Waterville, and Ray McGee, 65, also of Waterville, discovered that he had disappeared after rounding the bend. Circling back, Nichols said, the two men discovered Giguere in the west-side ditch.

Giguere was rushed to EMMC in Bangor but died later that night as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Nichols said that Sgt. Randy Hall, his department’s lead investigator on the incident, continues to look into why Giguere failed to negotiate the curve.

“The obvious thing is that he failed to negotiate the turn,” Nichols said. “Why that happened, we don’t know yet.”

Nichols said that no other vehicles were believed to be in the area, and no skid marks or other common signs of a loss of control were found. Police conducted tests for the presence of drugs and alcohol, as is the standard procedure with serious accidents.

Nichols said that Giguere was not wearing a helmet. The Carrabassett Valley Fire Department and NorthStar Ambulance Service assisted police at the scene.
