NEW SHARON – The organizer of the 4th annual Crowell Pond Fishing Derby is expecting this year’s event to be the biggest ever, and hopes to top previous fund raising totals to benefit Cape Cod Hill School.

The fishing derby will be held on Crowell Pond on Route 41 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26. DeAnna Meeks, a member of the CCHS Parent Teacher Organization and an ice fishing enthusiast, sees the event as a way to supplement the school teachers’ limited classroom budgets and pay for field trip expenses.

Trophies and prizes, donated by Franklin County businesses, are provided for the top catches in different fish categories. The grand prize, so to speak, is reserved for the biggest brookie; $100 cash.

A trout is weighed at last year's Crowell Pond Fishing Derby as one young participant looks on.

“It’s a nice way to get kids outside, something families can do together,” Meeks said. “It’s something different, not necessarily a spaghetti dinner.”

The event has raised between $1,200 and $1,500 annually, but Meeks said that local interest appears particularly high this year. In addition to the fishing, there will be a bake sale and a 50/50 raffle with more prizes. All the money raised goes to CCHS.

“Every year it gets a little bigger,” Meeks said. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at Crowell Pond on derby day tomorrow.

  1. It’s too bad we feel we need to teach our children to cause pain in order to raise money for a good cause …

  2. I guess he thinks that catching fish (and I will add that MOST ALL the trout and Bass go home with folks to eat) and the rest, well– visit Crowell Pond someday, on a nice day–the Eagles eat good there, they are there ALMOST everytime I am there, EATING and FARAGING..it’s called a FOOD CHAIN. ~ And ANYTIME you would like to stop by our school or ANY school to donate some cash— Feel Free!!!

  3. Kippy are you serious??!!

DeAnna – Thank you for putting your time and energy into such a good cause. Many families look forward to it each year. Keep up the good work!

  4. This is not a bad thing to be teaching children, this is a great thing. They are learning to take care of themselves, they are learning not to just expect things to be given to them by seeing how much work goes into the fundraiser, they are learning it is good to be involved in your community and it keeps them outside doing healthy activities. There is no pain involved, fish are here to feed us, it is not cruelty.

  5. And it’s too bad that you feel the need to post such a stupid and unnecessary comment.
And just what are you doing for the good of the community, other than blasting an individual for their efforts to raise money for a good cause?
I, for one, sir, applaud DeAnna Meeks for the time, dedication and hard work that she has put in to make this event successful and rewarding to the school and community.
Now. If you will excuse me. My fish sandwich is getting cold.

  6. kippy it’s too bad that u r wrong.Fishing is a great sport for all ages.I promise that we wont cause unneeded pain.kippy dont get mad a that bald eagle for eating your little fishies to feed its family

  7. Awesome!
The kids learn about fishing, get outside for some excersise and fresh air, and the proceeds help a great cause.

  8. I read your article in the paper and think its great that you have so many people raising money for your school. Mrs. Meeks really is spending a lot of time and energy to raise money for your school. I live in Indiana and wish parents in our area would get involved as much as the parents in your community. You had a response stating that it is bad judgement to teach your children to cause pain to raise money, and your headlines in the paper were about the six boys that were arrested for a drug bust. Im sure as a parent and grandparent I would much rather have my children fishing instead of out selling drugs. Congratulations to Deanna Meeks and all the others who are not only working for a good cause, but teaching their children values and how to have fun with their families.

  9. Kippy,

Chances are that you too have eaten an animal or two in your day. Don’t look down your judgmental nose at those that are willing to harvest their own dinner and gather as a community for a good cause. Your an idiot.

  10. wow kippy—so negative! you should come out and see for yourself–maybe grab a cookie and a hug ;P this will be my third year attending and wont be my last–the kids love it~~mom and dad too. The Meeks’ work their tail off for weeks for this event~you should be ashamed of yourself. Apology due kippy!

  11. I love these things. I never catch anything but it’s fun anyway. Kippy, do you have any body piercings? If so, keep you opinions off my fish, or the fish I’d like to catch. It’s not about violence, it’s about the process. Good clean outdoor air and experiences. Video games are cruel, atvs teach sedentary lifestyles. Fishing is a good outdoor activity that benefits all who participate.
