On the summit of Bald Mountain in Washington Township, you can see the mountains of western Maine all around. At left is Webb Lake in Weld.

Big sky looking east towards Temple and Wilton.

  1. WOW! Wonderful. Thanks for going where I cannot and sharing your photos. These are wonderful. Great weather, too.

  2. It is a fantastic place that is about to have 400 foot industrial wind turbines (19!!) right next to it. I hope everyone gets out there and enjoys the unspoiled views and quiet while they can. Great pictures. Such a treasured hike.

  3. Wow! Great photos, Lily! Exceptional!

These are the iconic and unique mountains which deserve to be protected by the people of Maine… the stewards of our natural resources.

  4. my oh my, beautiful…take the same photos and add 450 foot windmills on almost every other ridge. it is devastating to say the least, that people in Maine cant see the irreversable harm the turbines and transmission lines will do.

  5. Beyond the ugliness of the 450 foot windmill towers, and all the environmental damage, where’s all the money? Has the money started pouring in at any of these locations? Are we able to say that we are making so much money that it is well worth it? Show me the money!
At first I thought the communities with the windmills would get their electricity generated for free and then sell the extra. Where is this electricity going? Why don’t we get any? If our state gets covered in windmills, can we get off the grid, so to speak? Will we be able to claim that we no longer depend on fossil fuels because it’s all getting used somewhere else?
The idea of windmills seemed so pure and simple. Now it looks more like big business is having it’s way with our mountains, streams, and woods. I fear we are going to regret moving ahead so fast without specific answers. Why not evaluate how things have gone so far, and then move on if we are satisfied with the information. What will our grandchilden say if this fails and our precious mountains, and our views have been trashed?

Lily, your pictures are beautiful. The comments about the windmill towers got me worked up, and I had to say something. I hope there are some good honest people out there on both sides, who are watching out for our mountains and other natural wonders of Maine.

  6. What beauty! It is beyond any comprehension why Mainers would allow this natural beauty or any of our natural beauties to be destroyed with such greed and carelessness.
