WILTON – Kids who grow up in this area know what it means to be part of a community.

Colby Neuschwanger is one of those kids and is one who knows his community well.

“He’s been walking these streets for almost ten years. When it comes to Wilton, Colby knows everything there is to know,” Colby’s mother, Elizabeth Neuschwanger proudly said.

Colby Neuschwanger is a 4th grader who recently completed a 32-square foot, 3D map of his hometown. It started from a class discussion about community which led to an assignment on the different vocabulary words that had come up. But the giant map was Neuschwanger’s idea, and it wasn’t even for a grade.

“It was just for fun,” Colby said, grabbing up a toy car and zooming it around the roads of the town he knows so well. “I really liked painting the roads. If I did it again I would add some stuff,”

Neuschwanger looked to his teacher, Catherine Rogers for encouragement. “We could add some trees and paint the lines of the basketball court on, that’s a great idea,” Rogers responded.

Many of the materials were collected from the Resource Depot, a mecca for projects like this.

Aside from knowing the streets of Wilton by heart, Colby is also a talented mechanic. He gets excited as his mom tells a story about a broken tractor and how he knew exactly what was wrong with it just by listening.

When asked about his favorite place in Wilton Colby simply responded, “Home.”

The map can be seen in the children’s section of the Wilton Free Public Library for another week before it heads back to the school to be used by future lessons
