FARMINGTON – Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District is accepting submissions for our 2008 Conservation Poster Contest, through Feb. 20. The contest is open to all Franklin County students in grades K-12. This year’s theme is “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil.”

The MACD state competition is held the end of February. Therefore, the cut-off date for the district contest will be 4 pm, Feb. 20, according to Rosetta Thompson, district manager. “We’d like to see over 100 posters competing this year,” she said.

State contest winners then move on to national competition. NACD is using the Dig It! Theme in partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Soil Science Society of America. This collaboration will complement the Smithsonian’s ‘Dig It! The Secrets of Soil’ exhibition which is on display through Jan. 3, 2010, and will then travel to museums across the country from May 2010 to September 2013.

Contest rules are as follows: Any media may be used to create a flat or two-dimensional effect (paint, crayon, colored pencil, charcoal, stickers, paper or other materials). The poster size should be 22×28 although 8.5×11 posters are accepted. Contest grade divisions are: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

A completed entry form must be attached to the back of the poster. Posters should be packaged so they remain flat when sent for judging. All posters must be created by an individual student. Although younger students may receive a limited amount of help from parents and teachers in the planning process, each student is encouraged to do as much of the work as possible by him/herself.

FCSWCD thanks members of the local art community that kindly donate their time to judge the District’s Poster Contest.

The District’s winner will receive a $50 savings bond. Second and third place winners will receive a gift certificate for a plant through the FCSWCD’s shrub program. The first place winner in each division will be entered in the MACD state contest. First place state winners in each division will go on to the NACD national competition. The contest is open to public, private and home school students.

The Conservation Poster Contest is one of the many environmental education programs offered by the District. FCSWCD’s mission is to address the conservation of natural resources for all citizens by providing technical assistance and educational programs.
