SOUTH CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will present, direct from Ireland, the six member all female band Liadan (pronounced Lee-a-dun) at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Monday, Oct. 6 in South Carthage, Maine at 7 p.m. There will be a pre-show jam at 6:15 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam for a few minutes with the artists.

Líadan’s mesmerizing singing and creative instrumental music have been captivating audiences throughout Ireland, Europe and America since the band’s formation in spring 2004. Blending together their rich musical backgrounds, these six talented young ladies create a fresh and exciting sound that explores both traditional and new material.

Líadan’s distinctive interpretation of Irish traditional music features striking string and reed rhythms and accompaniments while always keeping the melody central to their arrangements. In contrast, the band also performs a selection of traditional and sean-nós songs using acapella, harmonies and instrumental arrangements.

“The name Líadan was inspired by the ninth century Irish story, Líadan agus Cuirithir. The story explores the mysticism surrounding the Celtic poetess, Líadan and her doomed love affair with Cuirithir. She was inspirational to this Irish group as she represents strength and femininity through the medium of her art.”

From Galway, Limerick and Dublin, this inspiring all-female band has won numerous prestigious awards including the ‘Best Band’ title at the Festival Interceltique Lorient 2005 and the ‘Best Traditional Singing Group’ at the The Pan Celtic Festival 2005 in Tralee.

This inspiring all-female band comprises of six members: Síle Denvir, harpist; Deirdre Chawke, piano accordion; Valerie Casey and Claire Dolan, fiddles; Sarah-Jane Woods, flute; Elaine Cormican, whistles. Liadan’s Web site is www.liadan.ie/home.html
