National Day of Prayer to be observed in Farmington and Wilton

2 mins read

Once again the towns of Farmington and Wilton will be observing the National Day of Prayer with a noontime prayer ceremony that is open to all. The theme for this year is: “PRAYER… AMERICA’S HOPE.” The focus will be mostly on prayer this year, offered by community members, but will also include music. Please, come and join in prayer.

In 2005 this Color Guard from the American Legion in Farmington presented the colors and led us in the pledge of allegiance.

History:
The National day of Prayer is an annual event established by an act of Congress, which encourages Americans to pray for our nation, its people, and its leaders. Days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for such a day. Officially, the National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952 and was signed into law by President Truman. The law was amended in 1988 and signed by President Ronald Reagan, establishing the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday of May each year. The theme for the National Day of Prayer this year is “Prayer! America’s Strength & Shield.” Many communities across the country will join in observance of this day through a variety of events.

This year’s observance of the National Day of Prayer, which will be celebrated on Thursday, May 7th at noon, will take place at Meeting House Park for Farmington and at the Gazebo at Bass Park at the head of Wilson Lake in Wilton, rain or shine.
