Rangeley’s summer of happenings

RANGELEY – Several opportunities to participate and experience a variety of art events will be taking place this summer.

This year’s Tony Award winning production will be “Crazy for You” lyrics by Ira Gershwin and music by George Gershwin. “Crazy For You” was produced in 1992 in reaction to the conservative backlash that had developed because of the extravagant excesses of the 1980s; in a world where change and uncertainty are commonplace, where cultural programs and funding have been cut within school systems and professional theatres, an upbeat, musical to remind us of “the good old days,” was extremely welcomed. Mark your calendar now for a fun, happy, upbeat production to be held at the Lakeside Theater July 4-7.

New this year, RFA will sponsor a Drama Camp for the youth of the Rangeley Region to be held July 13 to 17. Haley Murphy has been directing, choreographing and teaching theatre for over twenty years. She is currently the co-director of the Reston Community Players Teen Ensemble in the Washington, D.C. area. Students in grades 3-6 or ages 7-12 are encouraged to register now (there is limited space) by calling 864-2963.

A Candlelight Concert by Victor Borko and Sue Downes-Borko will be held on two different nights in July at the Oquossoc Log Church. These excellent musical evenings will be enjoyed by all.

Did you hear the great reviews about last summer’s Diva Night? It was a night that will not be forgotten soon. Auditions for this summer’s “Diva Nights” will be held at the Lakeside Theater at 1 p.m., on May 11, and May 18. If you have a favorite artist impersonation, song or reading, we would encourage you to come out for one of the auditions and surprise all those in attendance. The last Diva Event was a spectacular success. Everyone had fun on and off the stage.

The Spring Music Recital to be held Tuesday, May 19 at the Church of the Good Shepherd will feature all the students of the lessons program (and others) who have been diligently practicing all year. The RFA underwrites the lesson fees which enables the children of the region to receive affordable instruction in music and dance. Refreshments will be served in the Undercroft following the recital.

A master class for pianists will be held starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rangeley, Maine.  World famous concert pianist Dr. Julian Gargiulo will be leading the class. An evening concert by Dr. Gargiulo is scheduled for that evening.

Participants are being asked to prepare one classical selection to play for Dr. Gargiulo and those assembled.  Dr. Gargiulo will then critique and coach the player with insights from his extensive professional career.

RFA is hoping that pianists in the Rangeley area will take advantage of this marvelous opportunity.   A small participation fee will be charged. Please contact Jeff Ellinwood jellinwd@localnet.com for further information.

Other events this summer will include the Annual Street Dance will be held on July 29, the RFA Home Tour on August 4, Art in August on August 6, and several special concert nights— Westerhoff, 8/6, Schooner Fare 8/21 and Daniel Taylor 8/28–A great variety and something for everyone this summer.

So whether it is becoming an actor or production staff member for a summer musical, a very nervous pianist at a spring recital, the undiscovered dynamic singer at Diva Nights, a new artist at a local event or audience member and supporter that makes it all possible; become involved in the Arts in Rangeley this summer. Tickets for all events will be available in June at the Rangeley Chamber of Commerce 864-5364.
