Tips for National Children’s Dental Health Month

2 mins read

STRONG – Amy Alexcovich, DMD, dentist at Strong Area Dental Center (SADC), presents some tips in recognition of National Children’s Dental Health Month, February 2009.

Give your child the gift of a healthy smile! Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits help children jumpstart a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Good oral health begins with an introductory dental visit within six months of the eruption of the first tooth, and no later than the child’s first birthday. Request a caries risk assessment before the third birthday. This can be performed by the dentist, hygienist, or your primary care provider. Cleanings are recommended at least every six months.

Sealants are clear coatings that helps prevent decay in the pits and crevices of a tooth. Fluoride treatments may be recommended to help strengthen teeth. Sometimes fluoride supplements are also suggested based on the amount of fluoride naturally present in your drinking water.

Sports are great for your body, but sometimes dangerous for you teeth. Be sure to use a mouth protector, especially for sports that involve hard objects like hockey pucks.

SADC offers dental care to patients of all ages. Major insurances, including MaineCare, are accepted, and an Affordable Care Program based on family size and income is available to uninsured and underinsured residents. For more information on their services or programs please call 684-3045.
