Grocery store, sandwich shop coming to downtown

FARMINGTON – A local grocery store opening at the beginning of the new year may fill a long-missing piece in the downtown.

Those who have driven through Kingfield will be familiar with Tranten’s, a grocery store owned by the Tranten family since the 1950s. Now Farmington will get its own Tranten’s inside the former Howard’s Rexall Pharmacy, and just across the street from the former Don’s AG market.

Foothills Management Owner William Marceau, who has more than 25 years in property management experience and owns the Howard’s Rexall building, said that he thinks Tranten’s is a natural fit for the area. He noted that ever since Don’s AG closed down, there was no place to buy groceries within walking distance of downtown.

“We’re finalizing a long-term lease now,” Marceau said, “and everyone’s excited about a grocer coming into town, it’s just been fantastic.”

Additionally, Marceau said that an Amato’s sandwich shop would set up inside the store. While the 5,000 square feet that most people associate with the Howard’s Rexall store area will house the food aisles, freezers and so forth, the narrower, 2,000 square feet that made up the pharmacist’s counter and storage area will make room for the Amato’s.

“It’s really just an added bonus,” Marceau enthused and added their sandwiches are very good.

Marceau said that his workers had already finished gutting the building’s interior down to the walls, leaving the Tranten family to begin installing their store’s furnishings.

“They’ve been doing an immense amount of work,” Marceau said, “and it’s going to be very nice. They’re great people to deal with.”

Marceau also noted that, as both the building’s owner and a local resident, the deal was a “win-win” for him.

“I’m excited as a property owner,” he said, “but I’m also very excited as a community member as well. It’s going to be an excellent addition to the downtown.”

The new store is expected to open near the beginning of 2009.
