FARMINGTON – The Greater Franklin County Homeless Coalition has successfully raised $10,000 to establish a Venture Fund to help those who are homeless or those at risk of being homeless.

Half of the money was raised through a combination of charitable gifts from Old South Congregational Church in Farmington, Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministries, A Night in the Park event, raffle and yard sale. That $5,000 was matched this August by the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area through its Venture Grant program. The Venture Fund is administered by Western Maine Community Action (WMCA). The Coalition raised $5,000 through events and charitable giving, and the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area matched these efforts to establish a $10,000 fund to help those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.

“Venture Grants support community activities that are venturesome. The activities must have significant outreach components to increase awareness of the United Way of the Tri-Valley area’s mission to improve local people’s live by focusing the caring capacity of our communities,: noted Lisa Laflin, executive director of the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area. “Projects are to be innovative, collaborative, sustainable and have the ability to leverage additional funding. Providing support to the growing number of those in our communities that are homeless or at risk of being homeless truly reflects the intention of this grant program.”
