Jay man arrested following firearm threat

JAY – A 23-year-old man was arrested after family members told police he threatened them with a firearm.

Adam Mears of Jay was arrested Tuesday evening on a felony charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a Class C crime.

A 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jay Police Chief Larry White, Sr., said his department got a call from residents on the Lomie Rivers Road who reported Mears was threatening family members with a handgun, or it may have been a BB gun, due to conflicting reports by witnesses. Jay Officer Michael Mejia and Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier of the Jay Police Department arrived on the scene to find Mears had taken off on foot.

Witnesses told police Mears had taken the gun with him, White said. Police immediately began to search the area and requested a police K-9 unit from the Franklin County Sheriffs Department to assist.

Jay Police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier notified Chief White, who also responded to the call and happened to spot Mears walking along Fuller Road.

“Mears did not resist arrest,” White said. No handgun was found as Mears was placed under arrest for violation of his probation and domestic violence criminal threatening With a dangerous weapon. He was taken to the Franklin County jail.

Cpl. Nathan Bean of the Franklin Sheriff’s Department, who had been tracking in the woods looking for Mears, had to stop when his K-9 was injured after it came in contact with a porcupine. Deputy Chris Chase and his police dog were then called in to take over the search for the gun.

White and Mejia continued to assist Chase and his dog until 11 p.m. without finding the weapon. Deputy Chase went back this morning to continue the search with his K-9 but didn’t find the gun. The investigation continues.
