JAY – A resident of Livermore Falls is in jail today, after being arrested for violation of condition of release after police said he was threatening motorists with a knife Tuesday afternoon.

Chad Stewart, 27, of Livermore Falls, was charged with violating his bail conditions and summonsed on a criminal threatening charge, a Class D misdemeanor.

On July 21, at 2:15 p.m., Jay Police Department personnel responded to the Maxwell Road after receiving a report that “an intoxicated male subject” had been threatening the operators of vehicles in the roadway. Sgt. Troy Young and Chief Larry White Sr. responded to the area with a Wilton police officer, but did not find anyone matching the description of the man.

Later, at 6:30 p.m., the department received another complaint of a male subject on Route 4, just north of Maxwell Road, allegedly walking in the roadway and obstructing traffic, while threatening people with knife. According to White, the description of both this and the earlier subject matched. Officer Russell Adams and Young responded immediately, locating Stewart, who the police say matched the descriptions garnered through the complaints.

Police say they found a knife on Stewart’s possession, and that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

“It was reported that he had been walking in the middle of the roadway, obstructing a lane of travel,” White explained in a prepared statement. “When the victim drove around the subject, Mr. Stewart allegedly had the knife in his hand and threatened the female motorist and her passenger and began to run after them as they drove off.”

Stewart was charged with criminal threatening and violating conditions of release, and was transported to the Franklin County holding facility by Adams. According to officials, Stewart remained in custody today, and it is anticipated he will be arraigned tomorrow.
