WELD – Polls open at the town office today at 4 p.m., with residents having four hours to cast their votes before tomorrow’s town meeting. There, the town will be asked to accept and try to sell the former Weld Elementary School, as well as vote on 48 budgetary articles.

According to Town Clerk Carol Cochran, all four local elections are uncontested. Selectman Bernard Vining is running unopposed for a three-year term on the board, while George Brown seeks election to a five-year term on the planning board.

Paul Druan will replace longtime MSAD 9 Director Neil Stinneford for a two-year term on the school board. Cochran said that she would seek reelection to the town clerk and tax collector positions, both of which are chosen every year.

An article, near the end of the warrant, will ask residents if they want to accept the building that used to house the Weld Elementary School from MSAD 9. The next article asks if residents want to sell the building, and how the town should go about doing that. The article specifically states that the playground equipment and outbuildings will not be sold.

Residents will also be given three options to fix a problem caused by a faulty plow truck which has had severe mechanical issues as of late. These options are to either repair the truck, a 1995 GMC, for roughly $30,000, or purchase a smaller piece of equipment over a period of three years for $122,838, with the older, larger truck saved for use during big storms. A third option would be to purchase a new, big truck for $137,180 over three years.

There is $21,000 in the Equipment Fund, whatever the town chooses to do. The rest would need to be raised and appropriated.

Possible road repair options this year include paving 300 feet of Bee Hive Hill Lane, a half a mile stretch of Byron Road, ditching and new gravel for the Temple Road and ditching and culvert upgrades for the Maxwell Road.

Residents will also be asked if the town should accept an acre of land, next to the Center Hill Cemetery. That land is being donated in exchange for relinquishing a right of way across property belonging to Neil and Joanne Stinneford. The article also asks if residents want to raise or appropriate $2,000 to construct a new entryway to the cemetery.

The town meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the town hall.
