WILTON – A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with assaulting a 7-month-old infant.

Matthew S. Soha-Girardin of Wilton, was arrested on Friday by Lt. Richard Caton of the Wilton Police Department and charged with Class B aggravated assault after his girl friend’s baby was reported by hospital staff members as suffering from extensive bruising and swelling around the head, according to Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson. Soha-Girardin is not the baby’s father.

At the time of his arrest, Soha-Girardin was on probation for two prior assault charges out of  Kennebec County, said Assistant District Attorney James Andrews on Tuesday. Bail was initially set at $10,000 cash, but will probably by amended so Soha-Girardin will be held at the Franklin County jail without bail due to the probation violation the new felony assault charge brings.

The assault charge was upgraded to a Class B because the child is under the age of six and the suspect has two prior assault charges within a 10-year period, Andrews said.

The baby was released from Franklin Memorial Hospital after staying overnight. Andrews termed the baby’s injuries as “not life threatening,” but “serious for a 7-month-old,” he said.
