Alvin E. Withey (1944-2008)

LEWISTON – Alvin E. Withey, 64, of New Vineyard, died early Tuesday morning at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston surrounded by family and friends.

He was born Jan. 17, 1944 in New Vineyard, the second of three children to Merwyn A. and Jenny A. Withey and attended Farmington schools, graduating in 1963. In Sept. of 1964, he married Donna C. Carsley and they had four children and divorced in 1979.

Al worked in carpentry and general contracting until poor health forced his retirement officially in 1994. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his grandchildren, and playing with heavy equipment. He particularly enjoyed his excavator and dancing whenever his breathing would allow.

He is survived by his girlfriend, Marcia Collins; his children, Dr. Lois C. Hamel and her husband Dennis of Auburn, Betsy Baxter and her husband Dennis of New Sharon, Carol Buck and her fiancé Rick Hisler of Wilton, and Douglas Withey and his wife Paula of New Vineyard. He helped raise other children, namely, Micah Durgin of Starks; seven grandchildren, Tammy Buck, Jenny, Jessica, Erica, and Gregory Baxter, Taylor and Courtney Withey; two sisters, Janet Metcalf and Joyce Dubay; several nieces and nephews; He was predeceased by his parents; and his former wife.

Public graveside memorial services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the North Farmington Cemetery with Rev. C. Scott Planting officiating. A reception to celebrate his life will be held immediately following the services at the Fairbanks School Meetinghouse.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made in Alvin’s memory to the Alvin E. Withey Scholarship Fund, c/o Franklin Savings Bank, Main Street, Farmington, ME 04938.
