Donald L. Cushman (1928-2011)

AUBURN – Donald L. Cushman, 83, of Dixfield, lost his battle to lung cancer early Thursday afternoon, Nov. 17, 2011 at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1928, in Wilton, a son of Walter Lee and Adeline “Laura” (Bickford) Cushman. He attended local schools before enlisting in the U.S. Army in February of 1946. Donald worked at the Rumford Paper Mill for almost 40 years as a supervisor in the Kraft Mill and later years in the Wood Room.

He loved to hunt and fish with his family and friends. He spent summers at camp where playing horse shoes was a passion and in the winter it was ice fishing and family gatherings on the weekends. He also enjoyed gardening with his companion, Eleanor Welch and making pickles for all to enjoy. He was known for his “Donald Duck” quack to all the grandchildren that came to visit. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be missed by all.

He is survived by his three sons, Robert Cushman, Sr. and wife, Jennie of Mexico; Barry Cushman and wife, Sylvia of Velva, N.D. and Greg Cushman and wife, Brenda of Mexico; seven grandchildren: Robert Cushman, Jr. and wife, Angela of Dixfield; Michelle Walton and her partner, Lisa of Rumford; Tracey Cummings and her husband, Aaron of Mexico; Shawn Cushman and wife, Leah of MO; Tanja Cushman and her companion Jeff Adam of N.D.; Jason Cushman of Auburn and Nathan Cushman and wife, Ciara of Mexico; 12 great grandchildren: Samantha Cummings, Katelyn Cummings, Stephanie Cushman, John Calden, Lauren Calden, Ryan Bourett, Chris Bourett, Sarah Bourett, Kolby Cushman, Bailey Cushman, Taylor Cushman and Devin Cushman; 8 siblings, Barbara Wardwell, Marie Thompson, Maxine Givens, Mary Hyde, Kathy Brackley, Jeannette Dunham, Ronald Cushman and Leland Cushman.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Doris (Blodgett) Cushman in 2004; a sister Roberta Brown; two great granddaughters, Rebecca Cushman and Brianna Gunton.

Funeral services will be held, 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 42 Weld St., Dixfield with Rev. John Gensel, officiating. Family and friends are invited to call one hour prior to the service. Private family interment will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Wilton.
