BANGOR – Maxine C. Given, 86, of Jay, and Hudson, died on Thursday, Dec. 24. 2015, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1929, in Wilton, the daughter of Walter Cushman and Laura Adeline (Bickford) Cushman. She attended Wilton Academy. On Nov. 25, 1948, she married Richard “John” Given, they made their home and raised their family in Jay. He passed away November 10, 1999.

She worked at Norwock Shoe for several years and later ran a day care out of her home. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, bingo and cards, but especially loved the time spent with her family.

She is survived by her daughters: Jeanne Jackson and her husband Richard of Jay and Joanne Morin and her husband Norman “Champ” of Hudson; her son, John Given and his wife Jennifer of Berlin, N.H.; seven grandchildren: Stacy Gagnon, Heather Barrows, Stephen Given, Russell Jackson, Emily Clement, Ashley Given and Kelli Jo Quintero; four great-grandchildren: Andrew Gagnon, Shawn Gagnon, Austin Welch and Chloe Clement, and great-great grandson, Aden Gagnon; five sisters: Barbara Wardwell of Wilton, Marie Thompson and her husband “Skip’ of North Jay, Mary Hyde of Farmington, Jeannette Dunham and her husband Wilfred of Farmington, and Kathleen Brackey and her husband Robert of Strong; two brothers: Ronald Cushman and his wife Linda and Leland Cushman and wife Sandy all of Wilton; brothers-in-law: Anthanase Couture and Bert Given and his wife Joyce all of Jay; sister-in-law, Irene Given of Chesterville and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son Hubert Given, granddaughters, Stephanie and Rhonda Jackson: brother, Donald Cushman and sister, Roberta Brown. Messages of condolence may be sent to: www.finleyfuneralhome.com.

Visiting hours will be held from 11-1 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec.  31, 2015, at Finley Funeral Home, 15 Church Street, Livermore Falls, Maine. Interment in the spring at Jay Hill Cemetery, Main Street, Jay, Maine.

  1. My sincere condolences to the Given family. Maxine had cared for many children over the years including my three sons. She was patient, caring, and loved each as she provided a nurturing environment for each child in her care. I can still see her bringing the children to DVBS at Jay Baptist Church and often helping out with special activities!

    The heartache from the tragic accident that claimed the life of her two granddaughters strengthened her faith as she showed me as well as others the strength only God could provide.

    My prayers to all and my family has been blessed and lives touched by this precious lady!
