Letter to the Editor: High school renovation essential

1 min read

A vote to authorize the full renovation and expansion of Mt. Blue High School is not simply an investment in excellent education facilities; it is also a bold step toward providing access to quality health care for you and your family.

As President and Chief Executive Office of Franklin Memorial Hospital and Franklin Community Health Network, one of my responsibilities is to search for and hire the best health care professionals available in order to maintain or expand services for residents in our area. Our ability to recruit highly qualified physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technologists, and other much-sought-after medical specialists is often contingent upon the attractiveness of our local schools.

During candidate interviews, the first question often asked by these professionals is related to the educational system available for their young families were they to relocate to this area. If we at the hospital are going to be able to continue to provide you with the state-of-the-art, cost-effective health care you deserve, we need to work together to make available the best possible, state-of-the-art, educational experience for future generations.

Please join me on September 15 in voting to authorize the design, construction, and equipping of a new Mt. Blue High School Learning Campus.

  1. Thank you for this, Rebecca. There are plenty of reasons to invest our time and money in our children’s education and the facilities they learn in, and this puts a spotlight on yet another great one. I hope the rest of the community joins you in giving this project the green light on September 15th.

  2. Ms Ryder, when you recruit medical specialists from distant places, do you tell them that we need doctors who will charge reasonable fees, and that they will do the community more harm than good if their fees are exorbitant? I was going to add, “and that this is not a wealthy area,” but on second thought my point is that overcharging is not good health care, even if the people overcharged do happen to be wealthy. And the answer is not for the less wealthy to be patronized and offered discounts or “payment plans” but for the fees to be reasonable in the first place.

I don’t get the impression that all of your doctors have been given this message. To say the least.

  3. I, too, strongly support voting for approval of this project. I have volunteered on occasion in the classroom at Mt. Blue over the past fifteen years and have become appalled at the physical condition of the facilities. I realize the magnitude of this project will seem overwhelming to some but it will not only be a very important investment in our children’s future but for the greater community as well. Furthermore it is virtually necessary from a physical plant standpoint.
