Letter to the Editor: What SAD 9 budget vote?

1 min read

Sure, I’m old and naive, but I have never seen this kind of voting proceedure before.

Just by chance, I heard there was going to be a vote on the SAD 9 budget. Normally, such information and the proposed budget arrive in the mail. Not this year. In fact, I realized that I was completely uninformed about this year’s budget.

I went to vote, thinking that officials would have a copy of the budget at the polling area. Not a word available. Hanging on the wall was a copy of the ballot that basically said to vote yes or no that I agreed with the results of the recent budget meeting. What meeting? What results? I thought that if I voted “no,”

that maybe I could at least send a message that I was not happy with not knowing what the heck I was voting on.

Later on that day, I searched the town Web site. Not a word about the budget. I finally found information about the budget on SAD 9 Web site. What about those that have no computer at home?

No wonder there was a small turnout for the vote. For educators to keep the public in the dark is not a good thing. Although, it did allow the proponents to sweep the election.

Is there any chance that
