Free Outdoor Art Workshop
Prescott Field in FarmingtonElizabeth Olbert (faculty at UMF) will lead a conversation on the limits of realism and Andrew Wyeth’s depictions of Mainers before guiding participants through a multimedia art workshop. Artists and non-artists are welcome, and all art materials will be provided. Bagels and coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m. Discussion and workshop begin at 10:00 a.m.
Free Photography Workshop
Emery Community Arts Center at the University of Maine at FarmingtonJoin Dawn Nye (Associate Professor of Art and New Media at UMF) for a free photography workshop that will feature: basics of composition, strategies to involve narrative in visual media, and hands-on practice. This workshop is for all levels and will allow participants to turn even the most casual, at-home photos into intriguing narratives while considering how you can tell stories through photography. If possible, please bring a camera or camera phone to this event. Please email the New Commons Project if you would like to come but will need to borrow a camera.

Dr. Stephen Grandchamp (Assistant Professor of Literature and Digital Humanities at UMF) will screen and discuss four critical music videos from the career of David Bowie (including “Life on Mars?”) in order to initiate the New Commons Project’s exploration of his life and art.
“Mission: Imagination” Electric Violin Concert and Discussion

Free Lecture on David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” by Prof Shelton Waldrep
Emery Community Arts Center at the University of Maine at FarmingtonJoin Dr. Shelton Waldrep (Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern Maine) for an original exploration of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?”, including its meaning and common misconceptions about it. Among many other works, Dr. Waldrep is the author of Future Nostalgia: Performing David Bowie (2015) and The Aesthetics of Self-Invention: Oscar Wilde to David Bowie (2004).

Winner of the Rainbow Project Book List, Tomboy is a witty memoir about grappling with identity labels and stereotypes in the process of growing up. The reading group will meet on Feb. 9 to discuss Persepolis and on Feb. 16 to discuss Tomboy.

Persepolis & the Graphic Memoir

Rachel Lindsay's book, RX: A Graphic Memoir (2018), was the featured book for US National Network of Libraries of Medicine's mental health month 2019, and was included on the American Association of Medical Colleges' top ten summer reads list 2019.
