Bangor rallies past Mt. Blue, 4-1

Major upset 

FARMINGTON – The Mt. Blue Men’s Tennis team took on their toughest rivals on Monday afternoon at Hippach Field in Farmington, the undefeated Bangor High School Men’s team.

In a major upset, Mt. Blue’s Alvaro Vian defeated Bangor’s number one singles player, the previously unbeaten Will Cutshall in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Another singles match pitted Mt. Blue’s Matt St. John against Bangor’s singles star Ian McDonnell. In one of the best matches of the season, McDonnell won the first set 6-3; St. John took the second set 6-1 but then lost to McDonnell in a fiercely fought 7-6 tie breaker in the third set. In a third singles match, Bangor’s Josh Turcotte defeated Mt. Blue’s Nick Wilkens, 6-1, 6-3. 

In doubles play, Bangor took two matches: Patrick Stewart and John Szewczyk defeated Mt. Blue’s Greg Melcher and John Iams, 6-1, 6-3. Bangor’s Noah Frost and Kevin Wellington defeated Dustin James and Harris Roberts, 6-1, 6-3. 

An exhibition match between Sean Paul of Mt. Blue and Scott Dennis of Bangor was stopped with a tie score in the first set, 6-6, due to darkness.

Mt. Blue’s team record now stands at 4 and 3.

Their next match is Thursday, May 14th, 4 p.m., at Hippach Field, against Hampden. On Friday, the Mt. Blue team plays Messalonskee at Hippach Field at 3:30 p.m.
