Castleton will defend NAC title after 2-1 win over Farmington

CASTLETON, VT – The second-seeded Castleton State College men’s soccer team advanced to its second-consecutive North Atlantic Conference Final with a 2-1 semifinal win over third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington.

Farmington freshman James Tollefson put the Beavers on top 1-0 in the 13th minute of play with his 11th goal of the season, but Castleton scored two unanswered goals to earn the win.

T.J. Mazza scored the equalizer with just over five minutes remaining in the first half off a Gerrit Marino assist. Marino sent a through pass into Mazza, who one touched it over Farmington goalie, Matthew Dennett’s head for his first goal of the season.

In the 68th minute of play, Sean Fitzgerald scored the game winner from 30 yards out on a direct kick, propelling Castleton to its fourth NAC Final in six seasons.

Dennett finished with 11 saves as Farmington’s season ends at 7-8 overall.

Castleton goalie, Mike Anthony, stopped four shots in the win as the Spartans improve to 11-8. Castleton will travel to top-seed Husson University on Nov. 8 for the championship match. Husson earned a spot in the championship round with a 10-0 win over fourth-seed, Lyndon State.
