Eagles soar past Beavers, 78-67

FARMINGTON – Husson University women’s basketball cruised to a 23-point lead at intermission en route to a 78-67 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference action tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers stumbled to 9-10 overall and 7-2 in the NAC, while the Eagles ran their record to 11-7 (7-1). Farmington is scheduled to host Maine Maritime Academy Saturday (men at 1 p.m., women to follow).

Husson rolled out to a 41-18 advantage as the Eagles shot 47.1 percent from the field (16 of 34), including six of 11 from 3-point range (54.5) in the opening half, while Farmington connected on only five of 29 attempts (17.2 percent) with one make from 15 3-point attempts (6.7 percent).

Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) and Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) paced the Beavers with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Bree Hanscom (Mattawamkeag, ME) led Husson with 20 points, while Shelby Bradford (Lee, ME) scored a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards and Jenny Rollins (Corinth, ME) supplied 12 points. Rollins scored nine points and Bradford and Hanscom tallied eight each in the Eagles’ opening-half romp.

Husson opened on a 7-0 run and took a 14-4 advantage on a Rollins trey 6:30 into the contest. A 9-0 stretch allowed the visitors to take a 25-7 lead with 9:43 to go until intermission. The Eagles continued to expand their advantage with another Rollins three just prior to half push the lead to 41-18.

The Beavers whittled the lead to a more manageable 63-50 with 7:48 remaining in the contest, but the Eagles followed with the game’s next eight points to put away the win. Reserves helped knocked the lead down late, but Farmington dropped its second straight NAC game with a 78-67 loss to the Eagles.
