FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team dropped its home opener Sunday with a 2-0 loss to Bates College at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (0-2) are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when they host Endicott College. The game is slated for a 4 p.m. start.

Kelly McManus (Campton, NH) and Emily Sampson (Plymouth, NH) each scored a goal for the Bobcats (1-0) with Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, MA) and Annie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, OH) each assisting

After an evenly-played opening frame that featured McManus sending a bounding ball past Farmington netminder Kaeleigh Barker (Chichester, NH) for a 1-0 edge at intermission, the Bobcats controlled play in the second half with an 18-5 advantage in shots (24-12 for the game). Sampson scored on a well-executed penalty corner at seven minutes into the second for a 2-0 lead.

Farmington’s best scoring chance came a minute prior to Sampson’s score with an Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) push and centering pass leading to a doorstep bid by Andrea Tyler (Augusta, ME), but the Bates defense stood tall and Sampson scored on the ensuing clear.

Barker stopped 12 shots in the loss with Emma Deans (Gorham, ME) collecting a defensive save in the loss.

Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, DE) made five saves in the victory.
