Late surge lifts Thomas past UMF women’s lacrosse

FARMINGTON – Thomas College outscored the University of Maine at Farmington, 6-1, over the final 15 minutes of play, lifting the visiting Terriers to a 12-7 win over the Beavers in a North Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday at Leib Field.

Azure Illiano and Abby Trefsger each netted two goals to lead UMF (2-9, 2-3 NAC), with Emma Brown, Kaya Backman, and Jade Petrie each scoring one goal.

Thomas’ Anna Chadwick finished with four goals and one assist with Mary LaRochelle and Alia Chasse each chipping in with three goals.

The Beavers trailed the Terriers, 5-3, at the intermission, with Backman, Illiano, and Petrie netting UMF’s goals over the opening 30 minutes. UMF outscored Thomas, 3-1, in the third quarter with a pair of goals by Trefsger and Illiano’s second of the game, and the Beavers headed into the final quarter in a 6-6 deadlock with the Terriers.

Thomas notched the go-ahead goal from LaRochelle with 10:35 to play in the game, putting the Terriers in front, 7-6. LaRochelle added her second of the period and third of the afternoon just 71 seconds later.

An EMO goal from Brown off an assist by UMF’s Madisyn Smith closed the margin to one goal, 8-7, with 8:46 remaining, but Thomas rattled off four unanswered goals to widen its advantage.

Thomas outshot UMF, 25-19, with Beavers’ goalie Maddy Ten Kate and Terrier goalie Lizzy Gotay each charting six saves.

UMF women’s lacrosse closes out the 2022 regular season next weekend, starting with a game against Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m. at Leib Field.
