Mariners outlast UMF 67-64

CASTINE – The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners had to battle back from a 7-point deficit at the half to win in a thrilling 67-64 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Tuesday night in a conference match-up between the two Maine schools. With the win, MMA improves to 5-7 on the season, and 1-0 in conference while UMF falls to 3-7 with the loss and 1-1 in conference play.

Michael Wharff (Sangerville, ME) led the Mariners in double figures scoring 17 points, which included 5 threes, and also sealed the win for MMA with 2 free throws with 8 seconds left in the game. Derek DiFrederico (Millinocket, ME) and Jake Manner (Frankfort, ME) each scored 16 points while Paul Campbell (Camden, ME) added 8. Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro, ME) also played well for MMA, scoring 8 points. DiFrederico led MMA with 7 rebounds and 5 assists to pace the Mariners.

The Beavers, were led by Eric Taylor (Oakland, ME), who scored a game high 30 points and collected 10 rebounds in the loss. Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) was UMF’s second leading scorer with 10 points, and Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) contributed 8 rebounds.
