Men’s basketball builds lead, holds off Husson

BANGOR – The University of Maine at Farmington men’s basketball team led by as much as 21 points in the first half enroute to an 82-70 North Atlantic Conference victory over Husson University Tuesday night.

Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) paced five Beavers in double figures scoring with 19 points as Farmington ended a five-game skid to improve to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the NAC with Johnson State at home on Friday. Andrew Dean (Gorham, ME) tallied 17 points with DJ Gerrish (Rumford, ME), Eric Lelansky (Portland, ME) and Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) each striking for 10 points.

Tanguay also grabbed 17 rebounds to go along with Eric Taylor (Oakland, ME) 12 and Howell nine as the Beavers outrebounded the Eagles 54-36. Twenty of the Beaver boards were offensive, leading to 20 second-chance points.

Farmington rolled to an 18-5 lead over the opening six minutes off the contest and continued to apply pressure with a jumper by Tanguay with 4:47 left until the half giving the Beavers a 37-16 cushion. Farmington strolled into the break with a 42-25 command as the visitors shot 17 of 37 (45.9 percent) to the hosts’ nine of 38 (23.7 percent).

The Eagles were able to get within 10 points of Farmington in the second half, but, on the strong performances by Howell (11 points, six of six from the foul line) and Dean (11 points, eight of 10 from the foul line), the Beavers were able to hold on for the 82-70 win.

Brock Bradford led Husson (5-9, 2-1) with 14 points followed by Matt Mckenzie at 12 and Blaine Meehan at 11.
