Men’s basketball tripped up by Colby

FARMINGTON – Colby College stifled University of Maine at Farmington in the first half and held on to down the Beavers 63-49 in non-conference men’s basketball action Wednesday in Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers dropped to 2-2 with a trip to the University of Southern Maine on Monday. The Mules improved to 4-3.

Eric Taylor (Oakland, ME) collected team highs of 13 points and eight rebounds for the Beavers with Ted Neil (Strong, ME) adding 10 points, but the Beavers struggled offensively, shooting 16.7 percent (4 for 24) in the opening half to fall behind 32-16 at intermission. Farmington finished the game shooting 25 percent (12 of 48), while the Mules connected on 37.7 percent (20 of 53) of their shots).

Adam Choice (Newport, RI) posted a double-double for the Mules with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Artie Cutrone (Garden City, NY) chipped in 12 points and Kyle Donovan (Portland, ME) popped in 10 points off the bench.

After Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) and Eric Lelansky (Portland, ME) hit 3-pointers in the opening minutes to give the Beavers a 6-0 lead, the Mules outscored Farmington 16-2 over a nine-minute span to build a 16-8 command. The Beavers could only muster three points over the final 7:34 of the half as Colby expanded its advantage to 32-16. Choice led the first half effort with 10 points with Cutrone making three steals to spearhead a defense that forced 12 turnovers in the opening half.

Farmington chipped the lead down to 10 points eight minutes into the second half, but a 7-0 spurt – started by a Choice one-hand slam – helped the Mules seal the 63-49 victory.
