Tanguay powers men’s basketball by Thomas

FARMINGTON – Josh Tanguay (Gorham) netted a career-high 28 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington men’s basketball team past Thomas College 86-73 in North Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Tanguay, who also matched a career-high with 13 rebounds, was followed by Andrew Dean (Gorham) and Eric Taylor (Oakland) with 15 points each as the Beavers improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the NAC. Farmington is scheduled to host the University of New England Saturday. The Terriers dropped to 2-6 (0-1) with a trip to Fisher College scheduled for Saturday.

Andrew Duncanson (Portland) tallied 25 points to lead Thomas with Isaiah Brathwaite (Farmington) and Darrell Alexander (Fairfield, TX) supplying 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Trailing 44-40 at intermission, the Beavers blazed the nets in the second half, hitting 69.6 percent (16 of 23) from the field, while the Terriers struggled, shooting 27.8 percent (10 of 36) . Tanguay finished the game shooting 12 of 13 from the field.

Farmington used an 8-0 early in the second half to claim the lead and kept the distance at one or two positions for the next 10 minutes. Brathwaite hit a three to cut the lead to 67-64 with 8:57 left in the game, but Farmington scored the game’s next eight points to build a 75-64 command. The run was finished off by a Tanguay layup.

Ted Neil (Strong) also contributed 14 points for the Beavers as Neil and Dean each canned four 3-pointers and Eric Lelansky (Portland) dished out eight assists.
