UMF’s Laflin nets 1,000th point in women’s win

FARMINGTON – Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) scored 23 points, including the 1,000th of her collegiate career, as the University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team posted a 71-55 North Atlantic Conference victory over Johnson State College tonight in Dearborn Gymnasium.

Laflin, the 14th women’s basketball player in school history to reach the milestone, also grabbed eight rebounds as the Beavers improved to 7-8 overall and 5-0 in the NAC. The Badgers dropped to 4-9 (0-3).

Following Laflin, Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) supplied nine points with Jillian Ross (Belfast, ME) adding eight points and eight boards and Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) and Brittany York (Strong, ME) each supplied eight points.

Claudia Martineau (Washington, VT) scored 13 points to lead Johnson State with Casey Rusin (Wilmington, VT) chipping in 10 in the loss.

Laflin’s broke the mark 4:11 into the contest on a layup during an 11-2 run in which the Beavers built a 17-6 advantage. The lead was pushed to 12 points with five minutes left in the first half before the Badgers mustered a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 36-35 with 1:58 left in the half. A pair of Laflin free throws and a 3-pointer by Porter allowed the Beavers to take a 41-35 lead into the break.

The hosts held a 49-44 lead when an 8-0 stretch helped Farmington push the command to 13 points with 10:11 left in the second half. The Beavers led by as much as 19 points in the second half in holding off the Badgers for the 71-55 victory.
