Women’s basketball sets down Lyndon

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team evened its record at 8-8 overall and ran its record to 6-0 in the North Atlantic Conference with a 77-65 victory over Lyndon State College today in Dearborn Gymnasium.

Farmington is off until next weekend when the Beavers are slated to travel to Vermont with trips to Green Mountain College (Friday) and Castleton State College (Saturday). The Hornets dropped to 6-7 (2-2).

Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) notched a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards and Jillian Ross (Belfast, ME) scored a career-high 17 points for the Beavers. Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) pitched in with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) chipped in 12 points. The Beavers converted 19 of 21 free throws (90.5 percent) in the win. Lyndon was no slouch at the line either, hitting 12 of 15 (80.0 percent).

Jen Stoddard-Imari (Danville, VT) paced the Hornets with 23 points, while Jackie Wetzel (Braintree, MA) and Sara Fetterhoff (Jay, ME) each added 10 points.

The Beavers stumbled into the contest with a stretch of six turnovers on consecutive possessions, while Wetzel scored six points and Stoddard-Imari supplied five to help Lyndon out to a 21-15 lead. Farmington took its first lead of the game at 5:22 on a Porter jumper at 23-22. After a Lyndon basket, the Beavers outscored the Hornets 10-3 to close out the half with a Ross 3-pointer at the buzzer giving the hosts a 33-27 lead at the break

Save an 8-1 Lyndon run midframe that allowed the visitors to get within six points, the Beavers built and maintained a double-digit cushion throughout the second half. With the score at 54-48, Ross, Laflin and Porter each put in two points over the next minute to build a 12-point advantage en route to the 77-65 victory.
