Women’s basketball turns back MMA

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team notched a 60-49 North Atlantic Conference win over Maine Maritime Academy today at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers evened their record at 10-10 (8-2 in the NAC) and are scheduled to host Castleton State College Friday. The Mariners (7-13, 3-6) are tabbed to take on Husson University in Bangor Tuesday.

Brittany York (Strong, ME) netted a career-high 16 points and Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) added 16 points for Farmington with Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) corralling 10 rebounds. The Beaver defense forced the visitors into 26 turnovers.

Samantha Goda (Eliot, ME) led the Mariners with 14 points, while Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) chipped in 12 points and Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) supplied 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Beavers’ advantage was built in the first half as early see-sawing play gave way to a 17-4 run by the hosts midway through the first half to take a 25-11 command. York scored six points and Laflin chipped in four points during the stretch, which allowed Farmington to take a 33-20 advantage into intermission.

A key to Farmington’s opening half was the Beavers’ shooting compared to their competitors as the hosts hit on 13 of 34 shots (38.2 percent) to MMA’s six of 24 (25 percent. For the game, Farmington shot 37.1 percent (23 of 62), while the Mariners were at 31.1 percent (14 of 45).

The Mariners pecked away at the lead in the second half, but could only trim the deficit as low as eight points as the Beavers went on to grab the 60-49 decision.
