Women’s volleyball players earn NAC honors

FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington senior middle hitter Danielle O’Brien (Calais, ME), sophomore outside hitter Jenna Rowan (Kittery, ME) and freshman right-side hitter Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) were named to the All-North Atlantic Conference Second Team for women’s volleyball as announced by the conference today.

Junior defensive specialist Caitlin Flaherty (Pembroke, MA) was also recognized as a member of the NAC Honorable Mention. NAC All-Conference selections are determined by a vote of the conference coaches. Additional players honored are due to ties in the voting.

O’Brien collected 1.57 kills and 3.43 digs per game in conference matches with 15 total blocks. O’Brien was an All-NAC First Team selection in 2007.

Rowan recorded 1.95 kills, 0.95 service aces and 3.24 digs per set in NAC play. In 2006, Rowan also received All-NAC Second Team accolades. Rowan missed last year due to injury.

Mitchell led the team with 2.19 kills per game in NAC action and registered 0.71 service aces per game and 18 total blocks.

Flaherty paced the team with 1.05 service aces per game and also contributed 2.76 digs per set.

The Beavers (10-10) are scheduled to face Maine Maritime Academy Saturday in the NAC semifinals at Husson University. The match is scheduled for noon. The title game is scheduled to follow.
